TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - News headlines lately have been hit by the discovery of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG) that were found in syrup medicines, which is believed to have caused hundreds of acute kidney injury cases. The two substances are believed to be contaminants coming from propylene glycol which is used as a solvent and is also believed to be used in vape liquids.

Vella Rohmayani, a Lecturer of Medical Laboratory Technology (TLM) of the Muhammadiyah University (UM) Surabaya explained that Propylene Glycol is apparently not only commonly used as a solvent in syrup drugs, but is also found in liquid content in vapes.

“Just like syrup drugs, vaping so far has also used a mixture of Propylene Glycol as a solvent. So it does not rule out the possibility that vaping is also indicated to have DEG and EG contamination as is found in syrup drugs,” Vella explained as cited from the UM Surabaya website on Tuesday, November 1.

Vella said that cigarette smokers use vape as an alternative to smoking after many people believe that vaping has fewer health impacts compared to smoking conventional cigarettes. However, Vella believes this conception is misguided, especially considering the possibility of liquid solvents being contaminated by the aforementioned substances.

"Therefore, vape users need to be vigilant because vaping could actually cause various health problems. One of them is that it can cause acute kidney injury,” she added.
